6 Signs of Racial Trauma

When we hear of someone that was in a car accident or in a natural disaster- we don’t question their trauma- but Racial Trauma isn’t seen to the eye in the same way and can seem “imaginary”.

It is so crucial to discuss within mental health since it can show up as PTSD symptoms.

1) Not feeling safe in your body

Such as people of color, being more cautious of your surroundings. The body and mind feel unsafe and in danger if not aware of surroudings.

2) Unwanted thoughts or memories related to discrimination.

Being told/perceived as a race/background that is negatively reflective or triggering to veterans/family members/school mates/peers.

3) Feeling triggered by certain words/slurs related to experiencing discrimination.

“Invisible pain” experiences that hurt deeply but are not often spoken to and held deeply within. This can be important to have a clinician of color/similar background as yourself.

4) Internalizing messages about your race based on previous traumatic events and experiencing discrimination

These messages can come from media or social groups that we call schemas that develop internalized beliefs about Self. This is another important factor for your clinician to specialize in identity pieces to understand these schemas.

5) A constant sense of otherness

Created through externalized messages and beliefs from others that you are different when in spaces with people who don’t look like you. Being able to voice these concerns with a therapist can be empowering to learn tools and coping mechanisms.

6) Social Withdrawl

Healing is communal. From an old Indigenous saying- “My healing is connected to your healing and if I heal my pain then I will have the space to show up for you.” Being in therapy and in spaces where others share their experiences opens the space to share and heal in a community.

Take a moment and search for these signs within yourself and your loved ones. We all need some space to express these emotions and be understood.
