What is an Anti-Diet Dietitian?
Doesn't dietitian mean someone who helps people diet? Nope. A dietitian is a board certified nutrition expert. It means they've had tons of education about food and nutrition, how it affects the body, what our bodies need, why they need certain things, and how the body balances out nutrients and calories. Usually people who promote diets call themselves "'nutritionists". Nutritionists don't require 4 years in college, a long internship gaining experience in all types of areas of nutrition, and a test to become board certified like dietitians do. Anyone can become a nutritionist by taking a few classes and creating a random diet. Dietitians have a lot more nutrition education and are better able to help you!
SO WHAT IS AN ANTI-DIET DIETITIAN?
It’s someone who understands that diets do more harm than good and want to help their clients understand that. We are anti diet because we see over and over again that diets cause people to overeat, emotionally eat, binge, under eat, and lose their body's intuitive eating skills.
Anti-diet dietitians help you recognize that health is more than just about what you eat. It's about balancing nutrition, activity, mental health, relationships, social health, spirituality, and all other areas of health. Nutrition is more about balance than anything. It's about eating a variety of foods that make you feel good, including foods that you really enjoy and eating them mindfully while listening to your body, and understanding when your body is hungry and full. It’s about making sure your body is fueled appropriately for the activities of the day. It’s about allowing yourself food because you are a human who needs food, not because you somehow ‘earned’ it.
